Reducing Childhood Trauma and Supporting Parents - All Rise

Reducing Childhood Trauma and Supporting Parents

We help justice system professionals support the needs of children impacted by parental justice system involvement, assist parents in building parenting skills, and strengthen family relationships.

Why It Matters

For decades, research has demonstrated that adverse childhood experiences—such as having a parent in jail—have numerous negative impacts on children’s long-term health outcomes and increase their own risk of future justice system involvement.

One in 14 children in the U.S. experiences the incarceration of a parent, and nearly half of incarcerated adults are parents of minor children. These children suffer trauma and are at risk for a variety of behavioral, mental health, and academic problems, as well as long-term socioeconomic challenges.

Addressing the Need

What We Know

  • Many court-involved families experience stigma, separation, and trauma.
  • Caregivers often struggle to explain addiction and the court process to their children.
  • Judges, treatment providers, and case managers are looking for trusted, family-centered tools that build resilience and improve outcomes.

Justice systems can reduce these effects by understanding the impact of trauma and partnering with local resources to help families get the services they need.

We Can Help

Our team of subject matter experts provides training and technical assistance to justice, child welfare, and family service professionals to support coordination at multiple stages of the legal system. Training is tailored to local service resources and includes the role of positive life experiences in reducing the impact of trauma.

Supporting Families

With generous assistance from the Genesis Foundation, we are working with six sites across the country to integrate Sesame Workshop’s evidence-based, trauma-informed resources into treatment court programs.

The Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Demonstration Project offers tailored training, coaching, and technical assistance to support a range of court interactions from early engagement to judicial interactions from the bench.

Jurisdictions interested in implementing the SSIC curriculum in their communities can contact us for individualized quotes.
